I have never made a gingerbread house in my life. And I’m kind of bored today so I decided to make a gingerbread house and with the left over dough I’m going to make gingerbread cookies for my work as a Christmas present! The dough is nice and dark and tastes like Christmas (if you can find out what Christmas tastes like…..I kind of have an idea).
Ingredients: 7 cups of sifted flour, 2 tsp ground ginger, 1 tsp ground cloves, 1 tsp ground allspice, 2/3 cup water, 1 1/2 cups dark molasses, 1 cup packed dark brown sugar, 1/3 cup shortening, 2 tsp baking soda, and 1 tsp salt.
House decorations: Any candy you like and colored frosting!
First cream the brown sugar and shortening together. Add the molasses and water.
Sift the flour and all other ingredients together. Add to the molasses mixture until a dough is formed. Form into a large ball and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
Set oven to 350.
Roll out the dough to about a 1/4 inch and make gingerbread cut outs. Grease a baking sheet and bake the house outlines for 10 – 12 minutes.
With the left over dough, make gingerbread cookies!
Once the house pieces have cooled, have somebody help you put the house together. The glue to the house is frosting! But the frosting has to firm up before you can let go (or use a wooden skewer). We put ours in the fridge after we put the walls up so that it could set up faster.
You know for the first time making a gingerbread house, I have to say we did a pretty good job!
